Replacing old carpet is exciting—it’s the start of a fresh new look. But before you dive into installation, there’s one important step to tackle: carpet disposal. Prepping your space properly makes the process smoother, faster, and safer. Here’s how to do it the right way.
Clear the room completely
The first step in preparing for carpet disposal is to remove all furniture, décor, and clutter. This includes large items like sofas and beds as well as smaller things like lamps, rugs, or wall hangings that could fall or get in the way. Emptying the room gives you full access to the floor and avoids delays during removal.
If you’re hiring professional installers, a cleared room also helps them get right to work without risking damage to your belongings. For large or heavy furniture, consider using sliders or asking for help—don’t strain yourself in the process.
Cut the carpet into manageable pieces
Instead of trying to lift and roll the carpet in one giant section, cut it into strips. Using a utility knife, slice the carpet into strips about 3–4 feet wide. Start at one edge of the room and pull the carpet up as you go. This method makes it easier to handle and transport, especially if you’re disposing of it yourself.
If the carpet pad is underneath, repeat the same process after the top layer is gone. Roll each strip tightly and secure it with duct tape to keep everything compact and easy to carry.
Remove tack strips and staples
Once the carpet and pad are out of the way, inspect the subfloor. Tack strips (those thin wooden strips with nails) should be removed carefully using a pry bar and gloves. While these strips are often left in place for new carpet installations, if you’re switching to a different flooring type, they’ll need to go.
Also, check for staples or glue residue left from the carpet pad. These can interfere with the new flooring and may even pose a safety risk if left behind.
Handle disposal the right way
Disposing of old carpet isn't as simple as tossing it in the trash. Most city waste services won’t take large rolls of carpet as-is. Contact your local waste management provider in Bellevue, Redmond, or Bothell to find out if they offer carpet disposal services, recycling programs, or drop-off locations.
You can also ask Eastside Carpets & Floors about removal and disposal when scheduling your new flooring project. We can often include this as part of your installation package for added convenience.
Prep for the next step
After disposal prep is done, give your subfloor a good cleaning. Vacuum up dust, debris, and stray fibers so the new flooring has a clean, stable base. If you notice damage to the subfloor—like water stains or squeaky spots—this is the perfect time to address them before installing new carpet or another surface.
If you’re unsure what to look for, our team at Eastside Carpets & Floors can inspect and guide you through subfloor repairs or preparation during your flooring consultation.
