The Physics of Flooring: Protecting Your Investment from the Northwest's Changing Seasons
Laminate flooring is highly durable, but like any wood-based product, it is sensitive to the environmental conditions inside your Redmond or Issaquah home. As the Pacific Northwest transitions from cold, damp winters to warm, dry summers, your home’s temperature and humidity levels fluctuate—and your laminate floor reacts.
At Eastside Carpets & Floors, we know that to prevent buckling, warping, and gapping, the most crucial part of any laminate installation is planning for the Expansion Gap.
Why Laminate Needs to “Breathe”
Laminate flooring is made from a High-Density Fiberboard (HDF) core. This core naturally absorbs and releases moisture:
-
In Winter (Dry Heat): When your furnace runs constantly, the air dries out. The HDF core releases moisture and contracts (shrinks). This can cause tiny, unsightly gaps to appear between planks.
-
In Summer (Humid Air): As humidity rises, the HDF core absorbs moisture and expands (grows). If the floor has nowhere to go, it pushes against the walls, creating pressure that results in the visible buckling or peaking you often see down the center of a room.
The Role of the Expansion Gap
The Expansion Gap is the small space (typically $1/4$ to $3/8$ of an inch) left between the edge of the floating laminate floor and the wall (or any vertical fixture like door jambs and cabinets).
This gap serves as the essential "buffer zone." It is completely covered by baseboards or quarter-round molding after installation, so it's never visible. Without it, the structural integrity of your floor is compromised.
Expert Installation Tip: Our certified installers in the Bellevue and Bothell areas meticulously ensure the expansion gap is consistent around the entire perimeter of the room, particularly for large, continuous runs of laminate, which experience the most movement. We also advise acclimating the planks to your home's environment for at least 48 hours before installation to stabilize them.
Understanding and respecting the temperature factor is the key to a long-lasting, warranty-protected laminate floor.
